A Chinese military magazine revealed new details about the laser weapon Liaoyuan-1 (LY-1), presented during the Victory Day parade in Beijing.
The equipment, installed on warships, was designed to provide short-range defense against missiles and drones, and is considered the “last line of defense” within China’s naval air defense system.
According to the publication Ordnance Industry Science Technology, the LY-1 is expected to complement long-range air defense missiles such as the HHQ-9C, medium-range HQ-16C, and short-range HQ-10A. The integration of these systems would create a multi-layered defense network for the Chinese Navy’s vessels.
The article also highlighted that Chinese technology surpasses American models, such as the Helios laser. Among the advantages are the lens aperture, which is almost twice as large as its competitor’s, as well as sensors, lift mechanisms, and other subsystems described as more advanced and robust.
